Weather Triggered Segments: Selling Coats When It Is Actually Cold
The calendar says October, so the email shows coats. Half the list is in a warm spell wearing t shirts. Weather triggered segments fix that one obvious mismatch: group customers by the forecast where they actually live, and let a cold snap in one region and a heatwave in another pull different emails on the same day. It is segmentation by the sky, and its failures are as instructive as its wins.
The unit is a place and a threshold, not a vibe
A working weather segment needs three things pinned down: the location granularity you can actually support, usually city or postal area from the customer's address or last order, the condition that triggers the segment, a temperature band, a rain probability, a first frost, and the product logic tied to that condition. Anything vaguer, customers where it feels wintry, cannot be built, audited, or improved.
Thresholds should come from buying behaviour, not from what the team considers cold. Pull the temperatures at which the category actually started selling in each region last year. A temperature that triggers coat buying in a warm climate will be laughed at in a cold one, and segments built on one national threshold will fire late in the south and pointlessly in the north.
Forecast timing is the operational trap
Weather segments run on forecasts, and forecasts move. Build the segment too early and a predicted storm dissolves before the email lands. Build it on the day and the campaign misses the moment shoppers act, which for weather driven needs is usually the day the change arrives, or the evening before. Most teams land on a twenty four to forty eight hour forecast window with the segment rebuilt at send time, accepting some misses as the price of relevance.
Suppression matters as much as inclusion. A customer whose region just left the cold band should exit the segment even if the campaign was built yesterday. Stale weather targeting, pushing snow gear into a thaw, reads worse than no targeting at all, because the customer can see out of their own window that the store is not paying attention.
Where it earns and where it is theatre
Weather logic earns its keep in categories with genuine condition driven demand: outerwear, heating and cooling, garden, tyres, seasonal food and drink, sports gear tied to conditions. The purchase is caused or timed by the weather, so arriving with the weather is arriving on time. In categories where demand barely moves with conditions, weather segments are decoration on a send that would have performed the same, and the team's hours are better spent on a segment with a real behavioural split.
Test it like any other claim: hold out a matched group on the plain seasonal send and compare. Weather tooling is often sold on engagement screenshots from one well chosen storm. Your holdout, across a whole season of ordinary weather, is the only evidence that describes your list.
Do not let the sky override the customer
Weather is a context, not an identity. A customer in a cold region who has never bought outerwear from you, whose sizes you do not stock, or who unsubscribed from seasonal pushes is not a coat prospect because it is snowing. Layer weather on top of the normal eligibility rules: category affinity, stock in their size or area, consent and frequency caps. The segments that work are intersections, weather and a reason to believe this customer buys this kind of thing.
Keep a manual kill switch and a human glance at the biggest sends. An extreme event is not a marketing moment, and the difference between a helpful cold snap email and a ghoulish storm email is a person reading it before it goes.

Frequently asked questions
How do weather triggered segments work?
Customers are grouped by forecast conditions in their location, such as a temperature band or a first frost, and combined with normal eligibility like category interest and stock. When the condition triggers, that group receives the relevant campaign.
What data does a store need to run them?
A customer location at city or postal level, a forecast feed, category level thresholds derived from past buying behaviour, and a segment builder that can rebuild at send time so stale conditions exit the group.
Which categories benefit most from weather segments?
Categories where weather causes or times the purchase: outerwear, heating and cooling, garden, tyres, and seasonal sports. Where demand barely moves with conditions, weather targeting adds cost without changing results.
How should weather segments be tested?
With a holdout. Send the weather triggered campaign to one group and the standard seasonal campaign to a matched group, across a full season, and compare revenue and unsubscribes, not just opens from one dramatic storm.
